Saguaro cactus with Christmas lights & contest
Come to Phoenix during the holidays and you’ll see a familiar sight: the saguaro cactus lit up with Christmas lights. The above photo of one was taken at sunset at the Four Seasons Resort in north Scottsdale.
You’ll see others like it in front yards of private homes, at shopping centers and malls. I’ve seen them before at the Desert Botanical Garden and also on other resort properties. You’ll see some with more lights, some with less, and some with a Santa hat on top or a cowboy handkerchief tied around the ribs of the cactus.
Since we don’t get enough snow to build snowmen here, it’s nice to know we have our own ways to create the holiday spirit in the desert.
What’s your unique way to celebrate the spirit of the season? Post a comment and share your thoughts with the rest of us here at The Phoenix Traveler. If you do, I’ll enter your name in a drawing to win a prize–a travel wallet from the city of Scottsdale. The drawing will be held the week of January 1, 2009.
You must post your comments before December 31, 2008, to be eligible for this contest.

Not very unique – ham and eggs for breakfast on Christmas morning
It’s a great way to start the day, though. I generally just have coffee. Thanks for posting.
Since you’re a local, is there anything you’d like to see on a travel blog that features Phoenix? I’m open to new ideas.
Thanks,
Jackie

It’s less unique than I thought it was at the time, but my Midwester, German-Catholic family celebrated with tamales every Christmas. Turns out to be more popular than I realized…
