Arizona Highways earns its gold
Even though subscriptions are down and the magazine is experiencing financial insecurities (These days, who or what isn’t?), the award-winning Arizona Highways still manages to inspire judges to present it with honors for its photography, writing and design.
At the 28th Annual International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) conference last month in Nova Scotia, the “awesome” magazine brought home 11 awards and was named a finalist for Magazine of the Year. Arizona Highways, which helps drive tourism to and through the Southwestern state, has earned the actual title 10 times since 1981. The magazine, now in its 80s, was referred to by at least one judge of this year’s competition as, “the consummate destination magazine, still extraordinary after all these years,” according to the press release.
Among the awards presented to the state’s travel magazine editor Robert Stieve and publisher Win Holden were three Golds, including one for Larry Cheek’s February 2007 historical feature, “Delight or Defense? Design of Southwestern Pueblos Still Spurs Questions.” Tim Vanderpool’s November 2007 profile, “Rodeo’s Grande Dame,” also won gold, as did the magazine’s December 2007 cover shown above. Yes, Virginia, it really does snow in Arizona. Damon G. Bullock shot the winning photograph.
If you’re interested in a subscription to the monthly magazine, which is mailed to all 50 states and more than 120 countries, it costs $24 per year. The print magazine is available also in digital format.
And just to play fair, I am or have been a contributor of this magazine.
