We do travel

We do travel

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at the other travel blogs here at b5media, I thought I’d take the rest of this week to point out a few that I really enjoy reading. Though I wish I had time to read them more often.
Fly Away Cafe is the blog of our fearless leader Mary Jo Manzanares, who got her start in travel as a flight attendant. She keeps us in line, makes sure we’re blogging regularly and writing quality content. Fly Away Cafe is a great place to start for this exploration. Mary Jo, the blog …read more

They come from all over

They come from all over

As I head off to Maine for a week-long vacation, I thought it would be interesting to share how others see my state.
The view from across the pond
Arizona attracts many visitors from all over the world, England, Germany and Japan especially. Here’s a guy from England who’s been traveling the states. His venture brought him to Arizona, of course. His photos from the Four Corners region—where the Navajo Nation reigns—include some clear and up close shots of ruins in the area. But they’re at Mesa Verde National Park, which is really in Colorado. The Four Corners region steps inside four …read more

To Thai For

Deirdre Pain, from Malees Thai Bistro Desert Ridge (Tatum Blvd & Hwy 101) sends out a regular e-mail newsletter to her special customers (How did I get to be so lucky!). I particularly liked an offer that came in this week, directed especially to the wives or significant others of what Deirdre calls the “dazed look of most men as they are absorbed in Monday Night Football”:
Malees at Desert Ridge will pamper these ladies with a special MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL WIDOW’S EVENT. In the weeks ahead, this event will include some or all of the following:

Psychic readings
Jewelry
$4 Cosmos, Appletinis, …read more

CONTEST DAY: Would you stay at this resort?

CONTEST DAY: Would you stay at this resort?

An article in today’s Arizona Republic, the statewide newspaper owned by Gannett, reports on the strategic moves that one hotel is making towards going green and getting greener. Wild Horse Pass Resort & Hotel, the articles states, is making several changes, but I noted a few that were beyond what I think is the norm. They have, for example:
_chosen a hybrid vehicle, the Yukon, over the Hummer, to transport guests from the hotel to the golf course and equestrian center.
_stopped buying Arrowhead and now use water that is bottled on the Gila River Reservation (where the resort is located) to …read more

I’ve been tagged!

I’ve been tagged!

Check it out! One of my posts, “Live & Local: Shallow Water” was tagged at JabberTags by a fan as a popular public link in the Boomer category. I do not know the person who tagged me. How cool is that?!
You can see it for yourself right here.
The site compiles the “best the web has to offer. That’s cool, and I’m honored to be tagged. Does that make me an “it” girl now?

It’s about layers

It’s about layers

I think I’ve found a new fan of The Phoenix Traveler blog. An e-mail just arrived in my in-box this morning from her. Susan found me by doing a search for “Phoenix Bloggers.” And she found me. I’m thrilled! For those of you who’ve never been to Phoenix during the fall, she had a question for me. So I asked my new reader if I could post her question here. She agreed, and here it is, with my response below:

Hi Jackie!
My name is Susan (last name removed for privacy) and I found you through a random search of Phoenix bloggers …read more

Reminder: SalsaFest this weekend

Reminder: SalsaFest this weekend

I had every hope to attend this but will be heading elsewhere, instead. But I want to make sure you’re aware of this upcoming event. It’s relatively new to Arizona–This is only its second year. I think it will make a wonderful way for you to spend your weekend with family or friends.

Even if you can only drive down to Safford for the day–it’s a three-hour drive southeast of Phoenix–I think you’d have a great time visiting the farming, ranching and mining communities–not to mention tasting some of the best Mexican food in …read more

That was fun! — Roller Derby Part 2

That was fun! — Roller Derby Part 2

Sorry, my pictures didn’t turn out, but you gotta go see this. It wasn’t as brutal as you might think, but the occasional brawls were fun to watch. It makes sense why they let the EMTs come in for free; they were needed a few times when falls and pushes kept players down too long. Only one player got taken off site last night, and that was near the end, when the rough stuff picked up.
RULES
The program explains the rules, and here’s what I learned and observed:
Each team has a pivot. She’s the gal with the stripe on her helmet. …read more

Roller Derby in Phoenix

Roller Derby in Phoenix

If you didn’t know Phoenix has a women’s Roller Derby sports venue, don’t worry. Neither did I! I know we have football, basketball and baseball–I’ve been to many of those games. But I never knew we had roller derby; games are played on a flat track, and it’s supposed to be brutal.
I’m going with a girlfriend tonight to see what’s what. If I can get good photos, I’ll post them here tomorrow. If not, you should check out the Web site here.
In it’s 6th season this year, Arizona Roller Derby was started by a group of women who want …read more
