Come on in, it’s hot outside!
Welcome to The Phoenix Traveler. If you’re just flying into town, if your car is just outside the city limits, I’m here to help you navigate that dry heat. Don’t worry, though. It’s nothing to fear if you know where to quench your thirst.
I do. I’ve lived in Phoenix since 1987. I’ve lived in Arizona itself since 1977. Plus, it’s my job to write about the city and the state, to let visitors and residents alike know what’s new or new-to-you. That’s what I’ll be doing here at The Phoenix Traveler. I’ll give you the insider detail so you can find your way around this big city. It’s a big driving city, so it’ll help to have someone show you around.
For now, as we get settled in and get to know each other, how about a nice, cool margarita? I know the best place in town for that–Via de los Santos. They’re so popular, they don’t even have a Web site. Located at 9120 N. Central Avenue, just one block north of Dunlap by John C. Lincoln Hospital, this little mom and pop Mexican food restaurant serves regulars nightly. I’ve been one of them since I moved to my north Phoenix neighborhood near Sunnyslope in 2004.
They used to advertise the $1 margarita. But it’ll cost you $2 now, for the smaller size. You’ll get the full-sized glass for a buck more, though, if you don’t specify. Either way, they’re strong and tart, as salty as you want ‘em, and icy cold. They’ll quench your thirst. Order a pitcher, invite friends and get there early. The place is packed most evenings. For good reason. The food’s good, too.
Stay tuned for a cool place to take a hike.
Till next time,
Jackie

My favorite place for margaritas is Cantina Laredo up in North Scottsdale, south/east corner of Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. They cost more than a couple bucks, but they are fabulous and they’ll make your toes tickle!!!
Enjoy … have some of their incrediblly unique salsas, too. Our favorite is warm (temperature wise) and oh, so tasty.
Here I sit at my computer……ready to spring into my sandals and run for that margarita. It’s 5:50pm in Phoenix ….. definitely Happy Hour Time!
Thank you for the tip, Jackie.
I’ll probably see you there soon!

What a great idea for a blog! Phoenix is a lovely place — and you don’t even have to point me to the cool spots. I like 113 degrees, personally.
I already feel refreshed–not only by the virtual sip of a perfect margarita, but also by the introduction of visitors to a great locally owned establishment in an area of the valley with character and charm. Not everything worth doing on a summer’s evening happens in Scottsdale! Salud!
Welcome to the b5 Travel & Culture Channel Jackie! Phoenix is a great city and I look forward to learning more about it from you – great start with the Margarita recommendation!
Hi Jackie,
Great blog! Phoenix is a wonderful city and they found the right person for this blog. I look forward to reading your posts.
Just working away indoors, getting lots of stuff done. On the bright side, I have a massage at home scheduled in 30 minutes.
Who would have thought that Scottsdale spas could be found in our homes ???
Keep up your good work on your blog.

Hey Jackie, welcome to the b5Media family. Now your here, I’m not the new kid on the block any more….
Sure wish I could say it’s hot outside over my side of the world…it’s a cold, cold day here in New Zealand.
Thanks for visiting my blog, everyone. I’m still trying to navigate the site and figure things out. As you can see, I have a big open space at the top where I thought a photo was going but didn’t. I’ll figure it out.
Liz, if you know how to do that, I’m all ears, er, eyes. Thanks for the welcome. I’ll take a look at your blog.
